A circuit breaker keeps tripping Singapore homes and businesses for one reason: it has detected a condition that could damage equipment, overheat wiring, or create an electrical shock risk. The sudden loss of power is frustrating, especially when it happens during a shower, while cooking, or in the middle of a workday. But repeatedly resetting the breaker without finding the cause is not a safe fix.
Your electrical distribution board, often called the DB box, is designed to cut power before a small fault becomes a serious problem. The right response depends on which breaker has tripped, what was running at the time, and whether the problem returns after you reset it.
What a tripping circuit breaker is telling you
A circuit breaker trips when the electrical current exceeds what the circuit is designed to carry, or when it detects leakage current flowing where it should not. In Singapore properties, the main types of protective devices in a DB box may include miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs or RCDs).
An MCB usually trips because of an overload or short circuit. An RCCB trips when it senses current leakage, which can happen when moisture, damaged insulation, or a faulty appliance creates a path to earth. This distinction matters. An overloaded circuit may be resolved by reducing what is plugged in, while an earth-leakage issue needs closer inspection before the circuit is used again.
If only one room, socket group, air-conditioning unit, or water heater loses power, the fault is often isolated to that circuit. If the main breaker trips and the entire unit goes dark, the issue may involve a major appliance, several circuits, the DB box, or the incoming electrical installation.

Too many appliances on one circuit

Damaged wiring, sockets, or switches

You might notice a burning smell, buzzing sound, warm faceplate, flickering lights, scorch marks, or a socket that works only sometimes.

Moisture from leaks or condensation

Water entering a ceiling light point, junction box, outdoor socket, or concealed conduit can trigger earth leakage. An aging or undersized DB box
Older DB boxes may not suit the electrical demand of a modern home. More appliances, multiple air-conditioning systems, induction cooking, water heaters, EV charging arrangements, or a renovated kitchen can increase load beyond what the original circuits were intended to serve.
A DB box replacement is not automatically the answer to every trip. The electrician should first assess circuit loading, cable condition, breaker ratings, earth-leakage protection, and the actual source of the fault. Installing a larger breaker on an undersized cable is dangerous because it can allow the cable to overheat before the breaker disconnects power.
What you can do safely before calling an electrician
Start by noting what was happening when the power tripped. Was the washing machine running? Did it occur when the shower heater was switched on? Did a specific room lose power, or was the entire property affected? These details help narrow down the fault quickly.
Turn off and unplug appliances on the affected circuit. At the DB box, reset the tripped breaker fully to the OFF position first, then switch it back ON. If it stays on, reconnect appliances one at a time. When the breaker trips again, the last appliance connected is a strong suspect.
Stop and call a licensed electrician if the breaker will not reset, trips immediately with everything unplugged, trips repeatedly, or is accompanied by heat, sparks, smoke, buzzing, burning smells, water exposure, or visible damage. Keep the circuit off until it has been inspected.
Never bypass a breaker, replace it with a higher-rated unit yourself, or use an extension cord as a permanent workaround. These actions can hide the warning while increasing fire and shock risk.

A professional inspection is worthwhile when tripping is recurring, unpredictable, or connected to fixed wiring.
